Culturally Responsive AI: Co‑Creating Dari Mental Health Literacy Tools with Refugee and Immigrant Communities

Culturally Responsive AI for Mental Health Equity

Co‑creating Dari mental health literacy tools with refugee and immigrant communities.

About the Project

Dari‑speaking refugee, immigrant, and migrant communities often navigate mental health systems that were not built with their language, culture, or lived experiences in mind. As AI translation tools become increasingly common in healthcare, they introduce both opportunities and risks, especially when used to translate sensitive mental health information.

This project brings together community members, interpreters, cultural brokers, and mental health practitioners to examine how AI translation tools shape mental health literacy in Dari. Through community‑engaged research, we co‑create mental health materials that are accurate, trustworthy, and culturally resonant.

Community Partnership

This project is being conducted in close collaboration with USCRI Albany, whose long-standing work with Dari-speaking refugee and immigrant communities informs this initiative. USCRI Albany plays a central role in identifying priority mental health literacy needs, recruiting community members for focus groups, and helping to contextualize the findings through its knowledge of and experience with the communities it serves.
